Turkish prosecutors have demanded prison sentences of up to about 100 years for five protesters who took part in anti-government protests last year.
Prosecutors in the Antalya Province on Sunday asked for the jail sentences for the five protesters who attended demonstrations following the death of a protester in Hatay Province last September, Turkey’s Hurriyet daily reported.
The defendants include Ayse Deniz Karacagil, who has already spent four months in jail and is facing sentences between 24 and 98 years in prison over charges of being a member of a terrorist organization, opposing Assembly Law and resisting against law enforcement officers.
The prosecutors also demanded between 26 and 95 years and six months for Murat Sezgin, 16 and 55 years and four months for Mustafa Cihan Yilmaz , 11 and 26 years for Ali Karakus, and 13 and 38 years for Leyla Nuyan.
The first hearing of the trial will be held in Antalya on June 12.
The Gezi Park protests began in May 2013 as a peaceful environmental movement, but later turned into nationwide anti-government rallies, which left eight people dead and thousands wounded.
Thousands of people took to the streets in Istanbul and Ankara on the weekend to mark the first anniversary of last year’s deadly turmoil. Police fired tear gas and used water canon to disperse the protesters.
