Iran parliament releases Kahrizak report

After months of intense investigation, an Iranian parliamentary fact-finding committee has released a report on the events inside the Kahrizak facility in southern Tehran.

In a long and detailed report published on Sunday, the Parliament (Majlis) fact-finding committee expounded on the death and mistreatment of a number of detained opposition demonstrators in the notorious Kahrizak prison in southern Tehran.

The report, which was read out to lawmakers in a parliamentary session, rejected earlier claims that some of the inmates died of meningitis and stated that at least three of the inmates died as a direct result of violence and substandard prison conditions.

The fact-finding panel holds some judicial authorities, prison wardens and police officials responsible for the sordid incidents, but directly blames former Tehran prosecutor Saeed Mortazavi for ordering the transfer of the detainees to Kahrizak.

The panel nevertheless insists that none of the offences that took place in Kahrizak, which reportedly housed more than 160 people detained during protests in Tehran on July 9th, amounted to rape and sexual abuse.

Located south of Tehran, Kahrizak became a scene of controversy after reports surfaced about the mysterious death of some of the inmates. The prison was subsequently ordered shut by the Leader of Ummah Imam Ali Khamenei.
